What about our communities?
Last week, Inky_Jewel described the Petro Razor that's shaving off the inefficient systems we've grown accustomed to, particularly the suburbs. We commute to work. We buy food that travels hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles before it hits the store shelves. We live far from our families and friends while we hardly know most of our neighbors.
We're not in trouble because of the oil companies or OPEC or the government (not completely anyway). We're in trouble because we let almost everything in our lives be guided--or misguided, rather--by oil. Why didn't we see it earlier? Were we blinded by our oil addiction? Were we in denial as we fed our guilt with more big SUVs and ridiculously large houses?
Now that our oil withdrawal symptoms are easing off, things are becoming clear. We are going to have to adapt if we are going to survive. We're going to have to make difficult decisions. We're going to go through some tough times. But we'll get through it if we just keep going and we build our communities.
An important mission
Speaking of communities, we have a new mission for everyone. We challenge you to get out this week and show us your community. We want pictures. We want videos. We want to actually see what your communities are really like. We want you to show us how important your community is and how it has helped you survive the oil crisis so far.
That's step one of your mission. Step two is the important part. We want you to speak up and tell your local, state or national government about your community and its needs. We need to make the government understand how important communities are when a crisis happens. Maybe then they'll help us build even stronger communities and prevent future crises.
Doing it the old way
Some people have found that the "old way" of doing things is now the only way. Gasoholic made me smile as I followed along on his 1979 Sachs moped repair adventure. Never thought you'd be riding that thing again, did ya? rdy2rte wonders if we'll go back to our old ways when it comes to employment and if it will make our lives better as a result.
Carboneer Missions
There are plenty of Carboneer missions still available. Gracesmom might give you one if you put some photos up. Pachinko still wants you to figure out her number. Saint3million is looking for some secret signs. I'm wondering about green energy and what it would cost you to use it. And there's plenty of Whatever Without Oil letters left.
